Cupping
WHAT IS CUPPING?
Cupping is an ancient form of alternative therapy where special cups are placed on the skin to provide suction to the body tissues. This method creates stretching while stimulating blood and lymph circulation to the underlying musculature and tissues including fascia. Because of the depth of its effect, cupping is among the best deep tissue myo-fascial therapies available.
Cupping causes vasodilation (dilation of blood vessels which decreases blood pressure) to allow new fresh blood and circulation into the area. Studies have shown that the vacuum of cupping brings 02 blood to the damaged and atrophied tissues which is essential for all forms of tissue repair and healing.
DO YOU GET BRUISED WITH CUPPING?
Cupping draws out toxins, dead blood cells and lymph, and the debris of worn out body cells that are present in the deeper tissues of the body. The markings that can occur are indications that the treatment has been successful in drawing out these harmful pathogens and toxins. Cupping suction brings them to the surface, just under the skin from where they are metabolized by the body’s natural processes. Removal of these toxins makes way for fresh blood, new living cells, oxygen, and nutrients to take their place and in this way, heal the body.
Although it is quite common during Stationary Cupping (left static for 5 - 15 minutes) to achieve dramatic 'markings', the less aggressive action of moving the cups, minimizes the intensity of the discolorations. As treatments cumulate and the release of stagnation and buildup has been released, no discoloration is likely to occur at all - even though each time the cupping may be focused on the same area, for the same duration, and with the same amount of suction.
Cupping marks cannot be called bruises simply because of the way bruises are caused. Bruises appear when the body experiences compression from a blunt injury or trauma that can break the blood capillaries present under the skin, which is why you see the redness. There is no compression from cupping, only suction that works to bring toxins to the surface showing up as discoloration. The differentiating factor is the cupping marks do not cause pain and if there is any discomfort, it is minimal and dissipates quickly.
